The students were introduced to the Gold Card fundraiser today and have the cards and envelope. They also have the Early Out Expedition permission forms.
Back to School Meeting, 6th grade
Mrs. Murphy Description of course The study of World History, including the Jewish State and continuing through the Roman Empire to Europe in the 18th Century, including the Renaissance and reformation periods; the study of portions of Middle Eastern, Eastern, and African history. Skills students will learn are the study of history, analysis of primary and secondary sources, geography and map reading skills, use of charts and graphs and note taking. Materials Text book, World History, section quiz packets, class notes, art supplies for chapter projects. The text book is online for the students and they each will have a name and password. Assignments Regular quizzes are graded and collected in class; quiz packets are completed in class and collected on test day; chapter study guides are completed in class the day prior to the test, the tests’ short answer questions will be given to students at the beginning of the chapters; a few chapter projects will be completed in class. All work is to be turned in when it is due. In the case of absences, students are responsible for material missed in class which includes note taking and quiz packets. Attendance Daily attendance is the key to success. Students are responsible for material, quiz pages and notes, they miss when absent. They will not have to take the daily quiz over material missed when absent. Assessment Daily quizzes are worth 5 points, chapter notes and quiz packets are worth 30 to 50 points, chapter projects are assigned variable points, tests are generally worth 80 to 100 points. Communication My web page will be updated often, especially the Assignment link, which will give information on material covered in class and assigned as homework. Feel free to send a brief email with concerns and questions, and we will set a time to discuss those concerns. I will communicate with parents and Mrs. Paulsell if we have concerns at school. Working together we will have a great year, and we can help the 6th graders make the transition into Middle School, and become competent, independent learners. Mrs. Murphy Description of course Study of American History from post-Civil War through the 20th century, with emphasis on U.S. growth, WWI and WWII, the causes and effects of these wars, the Reform Era, the Great Depression, Civil Rights Era, and the Vietnam War Era. Eighth grade students will participate in the National History Day Fair here at St. Agnes School in January and those who choose to improve their projects may attend the regional competition on the MSU campus, in February, 2018, the date to be announced. Winning entries will be entered in the state contest which is on the campus of University of Missouri-Columbia, in April, 2018. Top entries could go on to Nationals. Students will be given assignments to research topics of their choosing and create their choice of projects within the scope of this year’s theme, Conflict and Compromise in History. More information on National History Day can be found on the site www.nhd.org Materials Textbook, United States History, Civil War to Present, handouts for National History Day, the non-fiction book Flesh and Blood So Cheap, the Triangle Fire and Its Legacy and materials/projects from Engaging With History In The Classroom to enhance and reinforce the text. Mrs. Murphy Class Overview Mr. Branson for Math Ms. Vogel for Science Homeroom for Social Studies, Language Arts, Religion. Mr. Pace for band, Mrs. Gray for chorus, Coach Spitz for P.E., Mrs. Eyerman for Art, Mrs. Perdomo for Spanish. Overview of the Homeroom classes. Social Studies; American History, Colonial era through the Civil War, U.S. Government using text material and material from Engaging With History Language Arts; readings from the Collections text material; novels and non-fiction that we will read in class; Accelerated Reading, writing, Word for the Day, and A Sentence A Day, ASAD. Religion; Students will use The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers and Break Through! The Bible for Young Catholics in our study of the New Testament and the Church, and Liturgy and the Sacraments. The students will lead the school several times in our celebration of the Eucharist, and participate in service projects. Assignments Social Studies; Regular quizzes are graded and collected in class. Section notes are completed in class, chapter projects are completed at home, some projects will be worked on in class and tests are completed in class. Language Arts; will have a variety of class work, writing projects, and responses to literature using our literature and grammar books as well as the fiction and non-fiction class sets. Some time during the school day will be given for reading Accelerated Reading books. Accelerated Reading quizzes will be taken at school. Religion will have graded class work, homework, and chapter tests. Attendance Daily attendance is the key to success, but when a child has to miss class he/she is responsible for completing and turning in missed work ASAP. Books can be sent to the office or with siblings/friends and the homework links will be updated regularly. Communication I will update the News regularly and the Assignments link most days, which will give information on material covered in all my classes and assignments given for homework. Feel free to send an email if you have concerns, and we can set a time for a meeting, or if you have information you think I should know regarding your student. Graded papers from all subjects will go home weekly. Please sign and date the folder and have your student return it the next school day. The SIS Parent Portal will be updated with grades regularly. For Parent Teacher conferences I expect the student to be present. Behavior Policies Expectations and rules are discussed in class and outlined in the handbook. We expect the students and parents to have read the school handbook at home. We are using a demerit/merit system to record problem behaviors and exemplary behavior. Missing Work Homework is assigned to reinforce daily classroom experiences, or give students the opportunity to complete classwork. It is the student’s responsibility to complete all assignments. When students miss class time, they should talk to the teachers and be sure to complete and turn in all missed assignments. School has begun and already picture day is tomorrow. I look forward to seeing the parent for the information sessions tomorrow night.
